What brought me joy today

What brought me joy today:

  1. Exploring books
  2. Being around book people
  3. Being amused by people’s opinions on books
  4. A good video appointment with my cardiologist who has seemed uncaring and clinical in past, and somehow I felt more connected with him and confident in his care, and hopeful
  5. My cat asking for love and also being cat-like in her refusal to accept love
  6. Half a banana from Sean
  7. Appreciating the quality of Cadbury chocolate vs the cheap stuff
  8. Rhinoceros stickers — the sheer variety of them, and letting people choose them for their Book Crawl passports
  9. A book about joy inspiring me to write down my joys lately because apparently I spend a lot of time being grateful and appreciating whimsy than most people so I should document it
  10. Doing exercises in front of my little gold-framed Rembrandt postcard in the bathroom
  11. Tidying my 50-year plus stuffed animals and telling Sean I’ve manifested space for him to go to Costco for a TV.

Give myself a writing prompt

You know what I did today?

Dusted a really grody dust-covered ceiling fan in Peter’s condo.

Then vacuumed *cough cough*

Then also changed the AC filter.

Paid for the ambulance ride I took back in March when I wasn’t breathing right.

Then did my breathing exercises.

Looked for and failed to find a flower press kit at Aldi that some Insta Aldi influencer said would be there.

Then researched flower press kits on Etsy. Haven’t bought anything yet. Would I walk more if I looked for flowers to press? Hmmm.

Noted Mike & Nadine are organizing a thing in July.

Then researched bike trails in Minnesota.

Remembered Mary McDonald is in Duluth and the weather is glorious there in July.

Took a walk in the unusually glorious mid-April weather we’re having here.

Then called Sean to discuss the weather, the condo, Minnesota, and his bum knee.

Then I stretched my hamstrings.

What I didn’t do?

Work much. Or give a mouse a cookie.

LOOKED UP: what to do with pressed flowers

getting intrigued by thought of making pressed flowers. Looked up what to do with pressed flowers

Epiphanies

1. we need to take some vacations. That’s why we bought this super expensive van.

2. Sean and I both appear confident. Even to each other. And I think sometimes that makes us think the other is not feeling unloved or uncertain in our relationship, and then we miss opportunities to comfort and support each other.

Appreciating my progress

Must add more thoughts…

Deep thoughts — or not

today I wrote to Sean:

“You’re very supportive through my “am I an invalid /oh shit I’m getting old /oooops I forgot to lose weight” stage of my life the past few years.

Thank you.

Skechers are nice and comfy. But I do feel a bit dowdy.

Since I’m not spending $3000 to go to NYC, I’m spending a few hundred on shoes and dresses for Boca.”

Relatedly, I bought bunch of girly shoes today:

Today and thoughts of the future

Today someone sent two bagels and a cup of coffee to my office via DoorDash, from Brooklyn Bagel. It was addressed to “Cindy B”.
A few problems:
  • I didn’t order it.
  • I don’t drink coffee.
  • My home office, where I work, is 3 hours from our Palm Beach Gardens office where it was delivered.
🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️😆😆😆🥯🥯☕️

………………………………..……………………

Used up Ultra gift card on eyeliner and curly hair product

Partially used a B&N card for new Frederick Backman book

Cleaning out my purse is rewarding!

………………………………..……………………

I did not win last week's lottery.

I changed out my purse to a smaller, springy-er one.
I hung up a mermaid towel hook in a bathroom, and made plans for some artwork to make for that ocean-themed bathroom.
I collected things around the house for our Goodwill pile.
I ordered frames for art work I got in Amsterdam in 2023.
I ordered ribs for dinner (a tax day special at Sonnys BBQ!)
Somewhere in between I did a little work and listened to several chapters of Book 4 of Dungeon Crawler Carl.
A good way to end the tax season.

………………………………..……………………

Post tax season:

I have a massage scheduled tomorrow, plus planning time in a shoe store. I am not normally a big shoe shopper, but my cute shoe ratio is very pathetic right now.

Other things I have planned to look forward to once I have more free time:

  1. Book club at local library, reading a new book by Frederik Backman (he wrote A Man Called Ove; new book is My Friends).
  2. Sea Shanty singing with a local club at a local VFW. Certain to be a hoot.
  3. A board game day with ladies in a local ladies group. I will introduce them slowly to a few easy games. Maybe I will find a couple serious gamers in the group. We shall see.
  4. Lakeland Book Crawl, which is a 3-day event exploring 8+ bookstores in the area. I am so excited at the idea of such an event (and living in a place with multiple local bookstores) that I am even volunteering for an event I have never been to. I feel like I might find my people.
  5. Marie Selby Gardens in Sarasota
  6. Bok Gardens in Lake Wales
  7. Hanging up art in the house
  8. Getting window blinds replaced or repaired
  9. More unpacking!
  10. More bike riding!
  11. Reading Count of Monte Christo in the hammock while it is not yet too hot

Today recap

Took 2 hours off tax prep to take son to classes. Then got long-craved-for salmon sushi, even sitting down and eating in a relaxed manner. Then did two quick errands. And wrote out postcards with compliments and love to 5 friends. Now to go pick up the boy and back to the grindstone.

Chores can wait until tomorrow.

Think of a good thing about 5 people you know - if you can, tell them

1. Mattea: creative, loving, fun, healthy, recovering, honest, vulnerable, generous

2. Cathy Reitz: honest, healthy, generous, smart to get off social media

3. Diane P: brave, principled, smart, well-traveled, progressive, humble, charitable

4. Jessica: honest, loving, keeps things simple, sees the best of people, curious, open minded, adventurous, brave, strong

5. Stef: adventurous, smart, generous, honest, funny, fun, brave, well-traveled

Dream recap

I wrote this to Sean:

I just remembered I had a bad dream last night. That you and Nora and I went somewhere like a museum or theater, and we ended up sitting separately. And I was mad because it happened all the time because I always got lost. And I was mad because you guys never made any effort to come find me, I always had to track you guys down in past. So I decided to not waste my time trying to find you guys and I went and slept somewhere in a secret room in the theater. But then I had to leave and I decided to go to New York and get a really expensive hotel room and make you guys miss me. And I was figuring out on my phone how to disconnect you guys couldn’t track me down.

I don’t think this dream is about you guys. I think I want tax season to be over. 😆

Today recap

I worked for 11 1/2 hours today. I worked to some degree on 18 returns — several of them big messy multi-million dollar returns — getting 7 of them far enough along for review. For most of the day, my brain was laser focused on organizing info, writing notes and emails, and reviewing that numbers matched.

But the important part is… now I’m baking brownies (Thinking of Kristi Dorney, as always when baking brownies). And finishing up Dungeon Crawler Carl book 3 on audio. Gotta find some pleasure where you can in the last two weeks of tax season. Especially using senses other than my poor tired eyes.

Also, when Peter and I dashed to the grocery store between showers this evening, we were treated to a magnificent rainbow. The photos don’t do it justice for how bright and sharp it was. We felt like we could reach out and touch it.

Small Joys Project

Back in January 2023, I came across a British woman on Twitter who had written out 365 small joys on pieces of paper and put them in a jar, ...
