Recap of weekend

This week, my stepmom, aka GrandMaureen, visited. We saw Who Framed Roger Rabbit at our local historic theater on Friday night, then saw Coyote vs Acme this morning — fantastic to see such similar movies and to celebrate toons.

I also worked on another painting from the kit Aunt Laurie sent and baked 3 loaves of bread and took a long nap on a rainy afternoon rather than go out and play board games.

Now Sean is in one room playing D&D with friends online, Peter is his room practicing his Russian for a class, and I’m listening to book 6 of Dungeon Crawler Carl series while looking at event options for Dragon*Con next week.

Life in Tampa temporarily

I have about 8 outfits, 2 pairs of shoes, and 5 pairs of earrings. Less to choose from. I brought all the various face masks I’ve had laying around and some painting kits. No house projects. Half as many streaming services.

I buy food for only 4 days, not stocking the kitchen. Fewer choices, lots of work, less stress.

Things that make me happy

You know what makes me happy lately?

Seeing news stories that I know nothing about — being out of the loop is lovely.

Compression socks. Because I am An Old.

Seeing Peter eager for classes again and being able to support him through this.

Getting to know Nora as an adult

Deleting project ideas from my To Do list app

Sleep

Getting things done around the house — hung up art in foyer! Getting a bid on porch expansion!

Make don’t buy

A reminder:

"The measure of a life is not what you consume, but what you contribute.

Spend less time owning, consuming, taking. Spend more time giving, creating, making."

— James Clear

Well … I’m buying this larger dough proofing bucket to make more bread for friends!

And I’m working on painting and cross stitching many already purchased projects, and not buying more.

Juicy news … almost

I was hoping to share this once she has the job… but It’s too juicy: my daughter, the microbiologist, has an interview coming up for a job at a medical marijuana facility to do quality control.

My hippie dad is laughing his head off in the great beyond.

update: don't know if they ever offered the job, but she decided she wasn't interested in it.

Today’s work has been interrupted by

  • setting up DMV appt for son
  • moving laundry around
  • call to bank about potential fraud but was a legit purchase that I forgot (son’s tuition)
  • keyboard & mouse & software issues & talking to IT about these things
  • taking van to dealership and picking it back up
  • gym
  • laying down to rest after starting robot vacuum

Despite that, I still finished up my giant 1065, started and finished a tiny brand-new 1041, reviewed open items for another messy client, discussed a 990 with manager, and started another 1041 before laying down.

Busy day

Social media post today:

From baking bread … to getting my hair colored and cut … to shopping at a used book store for Lord of the Rings trio of books … to accompanying my mother-in-law to buy a family cemetery plot … to eating ice cream… to admiring my son in law’s collection of sardines. Just a regular day, right?

I’m exhausted. Who has time to work!

I’m laying down to rest before hubby and I go to a painting class for nerds.

I didn’t take photos of the cemetery plot. But it had a lovely tree.

(Answer to a friend about busy day:)

it started out a not busy day with two things planned — hair and art (see new photo). But the mother in law visit and other things came up. It was never rushed but it just struck me what a lot of amusing and fun and incongruous things in one day.

Curtain decisions

Hi Erin. I have always loved your sense of style, your house in Dillman Farms and your current house were/are both lovely. And you always seem to be able to pick the right colors for things. Don’t know if this will work with photos but we will see! I can always just use a little guidance. Or maybe just reassurance.

So my office is white with one bright blue wall. Bright blue wall has white shelves. See photo.

Opposite the bright blue wall is my closet which will have craft supplies and junk in it, and instead of closet doors I’m gonna put up a curtain. In between the two is an actual window that also could use a curtain.

Next to my desk, and next to the window will eventually be a single bed. It may have that blue quilt on it, that you can see on a chair. That chair will be moving out of the room this week so it is irrelevant. A smaller bright green chair may move in here though.

Other furniture in room is small reddish-brown wooden desk and small white shelves, so good neutrals.

So I figured using the same cloth for the closet curtain and the window curtain would be smart. Of course the closet opening is so large that the curtain will be most of that wall. It obviously ought to coordinate with the bright blue, and I do like blues and greens. But I’m thinking something as bright as the wall would overwhelm the room. So my instincts are something a little softer.

So I went to fabric store today and oh my God it was a fantastic local store with so many choices, a quilters paradise. I took photos of a few things that sorta called out to me, but then I’m worried they’re gonna be too busy or something. Anyway, here’s a bunch of Photos. Let me know your thoughts. image0.jpeg

I hate the brackets on these shelves. I'll eventually re-do them and make less industrial/obnoxious. Those shelves will eventually be full of tchotchkes and souvenirs and tons of things I’ve kept in boxes for years!
image1.jpegimage2.jpegimage3.jpegimage4.jpeg

These are little postage stamps. I do love stamps and mail. There was one more green — this photo — and another that was more blue.

image5.jpeg

This fabric is a range of colors. It intrigued me.

image6.jpeg

I really like all the plant prints. Maybe something green to balance the bright blue?

image7.jpeg

I loved this. But would it be too busy if really big?

I need to measure and figure out how many yards I need!

Thank you for considering my problem!

Lost & found

I couldn’t find my book or headphones to take to the gym. After the gym, I found them.

Meanwhile, coming back from the gym, I thought I lost my phone, leaving it at the gym. But I found it in the van before we drove all the way back to the gym.

And I had taken my work laptop to my daughter‘s house this weekend. And had to re-set it up in my workspace today. At first, I couldn’t find where I put my laptop case, but found it eventually. Then I couldn’t figure out why the monitors weren’t working, and then realized the cable I needed had fallen behind the desk.

So yes, a busy morning spent looking for things

Phone addiction v 2

I’m wasting lot of time on a dumb phone game lately — I keep saying I’ll quit when the harassment to buy upgrades gets bad but it hasn’t yet (I haven’t spent anything yet) — but I’m enjoying being less on social media. Trading one phone addiction for another. 🤷‍♀️😜😆

August Ins & Outs

In:

  • Drinking water
  • Strength training
  • Walking 16 miles a week
  • Planning vacations
  • Tax work
  • Unpacking
  • Finishing half-read books
  • Finish half-done cross stitch projects
  • Hermiting
  • Gratitude

 Out:

  • Staying up past midnight
  • Expecting every gathering to be a core memory
  • Over-scheduled weekends

8/27 Update: lots of tax work; several future vacations planned, lots of water until this week… also: not enough strength training or reading. And no cross stitching at all (but I have started painting instead).

Lots of late nights still but I have been better about less crazy scheduled weekends.

A mixed bag of success and not.

September will be less goals because I have lots of work.

Small Joys Project

Back in January 2023, I came across a British woman on Twitter who had written out 365 small joys on pieces of paper and put them in a jar, ...
