Memories, high school edition

Scandal: my high school was Florida football champs in 1980, year before I started. And we had pretty good teams while I was in high school, until my senior year. Pretty mediocre. And then! They discovered one freshman team member lied about his address and was suppose to be at another school. He never played, but he’d suited up for every game. So we had to forfeit all our games he’d been in. Ended the year with all losses.

So then! My high school looked into everyone’s address to find other cheaters. Turns out I was one! I’d used my mom’s church’s address (she was in the board at church so had access to mail) because I wanted to go to high school with my best friend from middle school. Been like this more than 3 years with no one noticing.

Now it is part way through my senior year. And they call me in about my address. I explained to the assistant principal that we were literally in process of moving and I would be a properly zoned student in a couple weeks.

Then I was ballsy enough to look him in the eye and say: are you actually going to make me — GHS’s *only* national merit scholar — transfer to my proper high school where they have 20 national merit scholars?

I think he blanched.

He let me slide the couple weeks until we moved and I proved I was in the right zone. And no one ever told our arch rival BHS.
